Crimppi is a Finnish-owned, internationally operating contract manufacturing partner for the industry. The company designs and manufactures wiring harnesses and fiber optic assemblies and provides electromechanical assembly services. Crimppi has operations in Finland, Croatia, China, and Latvia. Its customers include major industrial players such as ABB and Danfoss. Each year, Crimppi delivers a vast range of products, exceeding 17,000 different items in 2023 alone.
Sustainability is a key priority for Crimppi, with climate and environmental considerations embedded in its strategy under the theme of “sustainable growth.” The company plays a significant role in the supply chain of renewable energy and environmental technology. At Solnet’s Executive Breakfast event in Vaasa, Crimppi Oy’s CEO, Timo Harri, stated: "Our operations in Vaasa are already carbon neutral."
He further emphasized:
"Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important criterion for our customers, especially concerning Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Our goal is to implement carbon footprint calculations for all our products."
Effortless Solar Power with Solnet’s PPA Model
Crimppi actively seeks more environmentally friendly solutions in collaboration with its partners. The company aims to achieve full carbon neutrality in its operations by 2025. Already, over half of its production is powered by renewable energy, with solar power playing a crucial role.
In the spring of 2023, Solnet supplied Crimppi with a 200 kWp solar power plant, generating 160 MWh annually. Under Solnet’s Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) model, the solar plant remains Solnet’s property, while Crimppi benefits from affordable renewable electricity.
"Solnet’s PPA model is an extremely easy way for us to acquire solar power and access cost-effective renewable electricity at a lower price than grid electricity. Solnet managed the entire project on a turnkey basis, tailoring the solar plant’s size precisely to our needs to minimize surplus energy. If there is any excess, we sell it back to the grid. This approach is worry-free and risk-free for us, as Solnet takes full responsibility for the project, and we only pay for the energy produced," explains Timo Harri.
Currently, solar power accounts for 40% of Crimppi’s annual electricity consumption, with a total installed capacity of 345 kWp across its factories in Finland and Croatia. "Even in Finland, the sun shines remarkably well, and the difference in energy production between our Croatian and Finnish solar plants has been surprisingly small," he adds.
Fixed Electricity Costs Shield Against Market Volatility
Electricity prices have surged over time and are expected to remain volatile. The energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine led to a sharp price spike, and the situation has yet to stabilize. Additionally, the operational instability of the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear plant continues to cause sudden price fluctuations. The PPA model offers businesses protection against such shocks, which are likely to occur in the future.
"Solnet also takes care of the maintenance and repairs of the solar plant, so we don’t have to worry about them. In every way, we are satisfied with Solnet’s PPA model and the benefits of solar energy," concludes Timo Harri.
